The car retarder is designed to set up speeds of the cuts of cars at gravity humps. It may be also employed instead of the other retarder types used in the CIS at gravity humps in any braking position.

A top quality of the conversed construction, application of high-alloyed steel grades and chrome-plated pneumatic cylinder work surface ensure reliable and long-term service of this retarder.

Retarder versions

NK 114 Car retarders are made of 8 versions which differ in number and construction of individual components.
A 5-link Car retarder is arranged on a wooden sleeper base of 900mm high from the lower bar to the rail head. This is a basic retarder version. NK 114-01 to NK 114-07 versions are made on the base of the NK 114 retarder and differ in number and construction of individual components.
NK 114, NK 114-01, NK 114-02 and NK 114-03 retarders meet the requirements for the isolated rail circuits provided in the gravity hump control system.
For the gravity humps, which do not require isolated rail circuits within the retarder control system, NK 114-04, NK 114-05, NK 114-06 and NK 114-07 are recommended.
Versions with a distance of 900 mm between the bar bottom and the rail head are recommended for use at the newly-arranged humps and also for replacement of the formely applied and worn out retarders of the types KNP-5-73, ÂÇÏÃ and 50 with the appropriate number of links being provided.
NK 114-03 and NK 114-07 versions are intended to substitute the worn out KB-3 retarders at the available gravity humps.
NK 114-02 and NK 114-06 retarders are recommended for the use at parking brake stations or for replacement of the type PM 3-2 retarders.

Type NK 114 Car retarder advantages

Good workmanship based on the technologies which meet the quality requirements specified in the relevant international standards and are certified by TÜV NORD Independent Supervisory Society (Germany) ensure trouble-free operation.
Long service life (2-year guarantee period and at least 10-year period between overhauls) is provided through the use of the properly heat treated alloy steels, chromium - plated air cylinder work surfaces and polyurethane - made sealings and guide rings. This is confirmed by the 6-year field experience of the retarder operation.
Lower operating costs are obtained due to saving time required for maintenance (which does exceed 20 men hrs per month), reducing compressed air consumption and demand in spares and extending the period between overhauls.
Higher brake power (up to 2.5 MeV) at minimum (no more than 0.5 m³/1 MeV) compressed air consumption is provided at the more rugged retarder structure.
More smooth (though being more powerful) interaction between the brake tires and undercarriage components of the rolling stock is achieved by realizing more power at lower compressed air pressure thus providing better safety upon braking.
Less weight of the retarder compared to the Types T-50, KNP-5, VZPG and KB-3 which are being replaced now. This permits to use hoisting cranes of smaller lifting capacity when the retarder needs setting, repairing, etc.
There is no need to make new retarders ready before and after their installation - these are supplied preassembled and preset.
One of the major defects typical for the formely made retarders, i.e. the retarder top portion drift in a direction of the cut of cars motion is rectified by providing intermediate posts each resting on two bars and forming a rigid rectangular structure.
Quick-wearing components of the hinge joints, sealings and guide rings of the air cylinders, damper springs, slipper base bars, etc. may be repaired just at the place of operation.
Lubrication facilities provide safe and long-term operation of the hinge joints and easy servicing.
Pressure bolts made of special steel grades ensure safe locking and prevent threads from stretching.
Hot-rolled steel sheet (S=100 mm) used for making brake bars instead of the cast steel material prevents them from breakage and demage.
